Listening to a podcast is easy and gives you access to a whole range of free, diverse and interesting audio shows to listen to, on your computer or smartphone at a time of your convenience.

What exactly is a podcast?

Podcasts are generally audio shows that are freely available on the internet.

Podcasts cover a whole range of subjects including: science, history, sport, current affairs, retirement living and pretty much everything else you can think of in between.

Podcasts can be individual standalone shows within a particular subject area or be an episode within a series. You can subscribe to your favourite podcasts so that you receive alerts and do not miss an episode.

BBC Desert Island Disks

The Infinite Monkey Cage with Professor Brian Cox

So download a podcast player and browse through the vast selection available. Lots of celebrities, presenters and public figures now have their own podcasts so we recommend starting by searching for someone you know. Often there will be a list of 'similar podcasts' which help with inspiration on what to listen to.

Then, make yourself a cup of tea (or a glass of your favourite tipple) and find a comfy spot on the sofa. Tap the play icon and enjoy listening. It's alot like watching your favourite TV programme but without straining your eyes.

Podcasts have been around for a little while now which means there is an extensive list of episodes on any given subject, so you'll never be short of things to listen to.
