Norman shares his first ever Wing Walk at age 80

Wow, a wing walk at 80 years old.

Norman is the grandfather to Nykkol, Sales Administrator here at Audley. We spoke to Norman about this incredibly daring feat at 80 years old. Below, we share his inspiring story, another fabulous example of living life to the full. Life truly doesn’t need to slow down in retirement.

What inspired you to take on such a daring challenge at 80?

To prove that you can achieve anything you want to – if the will is there. And I wanted to raise more money to support the RNLI, which I have been doing now, with my wife Sally, for over 50 years.

How did friends and family react to your decision?

It was a mixture of admiration, madness, bravery, scepticism, and pride!

Was there a moment when you doubted whether you’d go through with it?

No. Once I had my mind set on it I knew I would go through with it. You can’t let yourself down.

Did you do anything special to prepare physically or mentally for the experience?

Nothing really. I just had to chat with my GP – who thought I was mad but said there was no medical or physical reason I shouldn’t do it!

What went through your mind as the plane left the ground?

At that point there really was no going back! It’s what we had planned, and what I had looked forward to for some time, so I was determined to enjoy it.

Was there a point where fear turned into exhilaration?

Strangely enough, I didn’t really experience fear, just pure exhilaration.

Can you describe the sensation of the wind and speed?

It was amazing. Although I did wonder if I would have any hair left by the time we landed.

What emotions stayed with you once you touched down?

I felt a real sense of satisfaction and achievement. I had done what I had set out to do.

Looking back, what was the highlight of the whole adventure?

I had huge support from my wife, our son and his wife, our daughter and her husband, and our grandchildren and their partners, and friends from our bowls club – who all came to cheer me on.

Did it change how you see yourself or what you’re capable of?

No, it just proved to me that you can achieve what you set out to do, if you have the will.

How does it compare to other challenges or milestones in your life?

It is probably the most adventurous thing I have done... so far!

Do you feel braver now, or do you think you’ve always had this adventurous spirit?

I suppose I was brave, but not as brave as the lifeboat men and women who daily risk their own lives helping to save others who are in distress.

What would you say to someone younger who thinks they’re “too old” to try something bold?

You are never too old. Have a go at anything your heart desires. Don’t look back and think “I wish I had tried that”, but be able to say “I am so glad I did that when I could”. However old, you still can. Where there is a will, there is a way.

What is your next daring adventure planned?

There is nothing planned at the moment. But there must be something I could do for my 90th birthday...
